There is the beginning of the sixth sense, which we can develop and turn into a vessel in which we can begin to feel the spiritual world—Godliness, the Upper Reality, eternal life, beyond the body, beyond everything we have here.
We develop this sense by the Upper Light. What’s the Upper Light? It’s some kind of energy that exists above this world. How do we bring upon ourselves the influence of the Upper Light?
I have the beginning of the sixth sense, meaning something spiritual, but I have no means to develop this spirituality in me, this special vessel. How can I draw and expand the spiritual force upon myself from Above? How can I come to this? After all, I’m still only this one point, in contrast to spirituality. That’s why Kabbalists write books for us. The books were written from the same places, levels, and spiritual attainments that they have attained, where they can recognize the forces, the Upper Lights.
When I in this world begin to study the wisdom of Kabbalah, and I study about the soul, about the sixth sense, which is part of someone’s consciousness who is at a higher level of consciousness than me (suppose this is this world and this is the spiritual world)—so by this, I draw the Light upon myself.
Pain pushes us forward. Whether we feel depressed, empty or confused, all bad feelings appear in order to make us think about their reason and purpose. In our world, we see only the outward shell of reality. We do not see what is hidden behind nature, society, a person or the cosmos, and we cannot control any of them.
As with embroidery, the links and threads traversing all the parts of the picture can only be seen on the reverse side. Likewise, we do not see the connections between events in our reality; we only see that “something suddenly happened for some reason.” How can I know the consequences of my actions? All of a sudden, I suffer a blow and I do not understand why it happened or where it came from. “Where did I go wrong?” “What did I do to deserve this?” And even “What’s the point of it all?”
Regarding the picture of the world, a person defines his world by the level of his correction. There is no point in waiting for mercy from anyone, or from nature. Only more suffering can be awaited. If we are going to remind each other about the correct picture of the world, it will bring us to the realization of the necessity of personal inner changes, your own inner changes.
Whatever goes on in the world around you, whether it is wars or something else, ultimately if you want to change it, you can do so only by changing your own inner qualities. Don’t rush to correct anybody. It is said, “There is no coercion in spirituality.” Don’t think that the world will change from you correcting others. A person can never correct anyone other than his own self. That is the only chance.
We want to be safe from the forces of nature which threaten us; we want to feel peaceful, happy and fulfilled, but instead we feel miserable, empty and weak. We feel weak not in relation to the externality of nature from which we sought to protect ourselves, but in relation to our internal nature, the desire to receive inside of us, which has grown and which we did not want, and could not correct, when it was small.
We let it grow, we developed it, we tempted it; we filled it with whatever it desired through this process. And so after thousands of years we discover that it is so big that it rules us and we cannot exist without fearing the future, feeling both empty in the present and not knowing what to do in the future, since it rules us and pushes us into conflicts, as Baal HaSulam says, into hydrogen wars.
The question is, whether it is in our power to stop this development, of which we have lost control, that is, the development of the internal desire to receive inside a man. In retrospect we cannot say that this whole thing has no roots. Of course, this is the way it was supposed to happen. We are talking about having succeeded or not, and we refer to the balance of powers alone. After all we were not supposed to succeed or not to succeed. According to the end, this is the state we should have reached. But today, when we realize what the goal of this development was, we have to find out the right way to continue.
